Occupying Lindy Hop: The Gap Ad to Twenty-four Robbers and Forward

I didn’t love Frida & Skye’s “24 Robbers” routine when I first saw it. I liked it well enough, but to be honest I was a bit shocked to find out that it won at The Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown in 2007. Although no one was more surprised than Skye & Frida. We were not the only ones. There were some loud dissenting opinions in the aftermath of that event. People were saying that it looked too easy, it was too slow, there were no new kewl moves. How could this be first place at an event billed with the name “Ultimate?” The same event that spawned the legendary 2006 Liberation final just a year before. A look at the other couples in that division shows lots of speed and lots of air. In 2007, there was even a special performance recreating The Congaroos clip which is much faster than Hellzapoppin.

With a little perspective, it seems that the appeal of 24 Robbers is because it was none of those things, and that all the criticisms laid against it are what makes it such a strong performance.

Happy Birthday, Frankie!

What else is there to say?  This is from Frankie's 88th Birthday Celebration in 2002.

My favorite DC memory of him where he took us to school.  In the midst of an improvised Big Apple during a jam, he jumps up out of his chair from the sidelines, stops the presses and shows the kids how its done.

And my favorite "new" video of him with his son Chazz Young.  I don't get tired of watching this.

Learn more about him at his official website: www.FrankieManning.com

A New Day for a New Theme, New Videos, and a New Social Media Account

Just needed a change in scenery as you can tell.  Besides the light background is less conspicuous when viewing from work.  Not that I would ever do such a thing. Also for your Sunday viewing pleasure, a beautiful and inspirational video created by a dancer from Seattle named Cheryl Crow which I found through the magic of Facebook.  She created this for the 2010 Swing/Jazz Dancing Video Contest.  Watch it and share with others.

And because sometimes you can't let the Man keep you down, I got an account on Dailymotion.com.  I probably won't post there very often, unless its stuff like this that won't go down the YouTubes properly.

Weekly Video Highlight: The Silver Shadows' Secret Origins and Korean Variety Show

I hope everyone is having a great holiday.  I'm off to Lindy Focus in Asheville, NC tomorrow with a sizable DC contingent.  You'll recognize us when we roll in with the giant DC flags tied in between the cars in our convoy ;)  I recently realized that this will be the first event that I haven't worked or DJ'd in over 4 years, so I'm really looking forward to it.  I'm tentatively planning on updating from the event since I'm just down there for the evening dances.   Until I post something, hopefully these videos will tide you over. This first video from the Korean Lindy Revolution 2009 by way of YouTube user hiyama80, was reposted recently on the YouTubes, so I thought I'd post it here too.
