I was going to post this right quick on the Facebook Page for Wandering & Pondering, but then I realized that I had more to say than a quick blurb.
This is the final for the Strictly Lindy Hop competition at the Korean Lindy Hop Championships during Camp Swing It. The 2nd couple here just kills it with the sequence starting at 2:40 that brings the judges to their feet.
Then there’s the all skate which is usually the least interesting parts of these kinds of contests because there’s so much going on and people just trying to survive until the end. It starts conventionally with everyone swinging out. It happens almost every contest simply because it’s the easiest way for anyone to begin. It is the basic after all. Plus the audience gets a big rush from seeing everyone moving in unison like that.
There’s always that little bit of tension from the competitors and audience stand point to see how long everyone decides to stick with the California Routine. On the one hand you there is the challenge of keeping up with everyone and showing them that you know your stuff. But then there comes a point when people remember that this is a contest of which the point is to stand out and effn’ win.
As you see in this video, the last couple blows convention out of the water by throwing a huge aerial and stealing everyone’s thunder right off the bat.
But then that second couple steals it right back by pulling a Kim & David special (see the end of this video) and throwing 8 kips in a row. Although it did look like he just muscled her over for those last few. But then they nail the end of the song with one last spot on kip. Damn fine show. Congratulations to everyone.
Placements (via the YouTube description on the video):
1st: JeongWoo Hong & Crystal Lee 2nd: JaeKyu Ju & Min young Choi 3rd: Tae Hyun Kim & Yoo Jin Park
And here’s the first all skate of this contest for all you completionists out there.
Go check out the FB page for this blog for more highlights from Camp Swing It and the Korean Lindy Hop Championships and much more regular postings of odds and ends I find around the Lindyverse and beyond.
Yes, I do realize I haven’t posted much lately here, but I’ll keep you company on Facebook until I can sort through all the stuff that’s being thrown at me. Thanks for your patience.
BTW, while we're on the subject of Asians, I thought I'd share my new favorite video. Haters bring the prejudice and ignorance and Asians bring the song and dance. This is how we do.
